ADHD Coaching
What is ADHD Coaching?
ADHD coaching is a specialized type of life coaching that uses specific techniques geared toward working with the unique brain wiring of individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It uses a process of inquiry to discover ways to function appropriately and effectively with this disorder.
When Do You Need an ADHD Coach?
Coaches are used both as a main treatment as well as a supplemental treatment. If you have successfully implemented other treatments for your child and they are surrounded with the support of others who have been educated about the disorder, chances are you will not need to employ a coach. However, if your child is still having difficulty in spite of all of your efforts and support, then a coach is a great resource for additional information and techniques that may help your child be successful.
What Does a Coach Do?
Coaches work with clients to help them better manage time, become organized, set goals, as well as start (and finish) projects. There is also an element of education, as each client learns how their ADHD affects them. Coaches put emphasis on finding individual strengths, and using those strengths more often, while finding “work-arounds” for dealing with challenges. Coaches help clients build confidence and learn that living with ADHD does not mean that you can’t live the life you want. They also help clients get a better grasp of what are reasonable expectations for them as individuals. People with ADHD “brain wiring” often need external mirrors for accurate self-awareness about their potential, despite their apparent “limitations.”
Specifically for Your Child, Coaches Can:
- Help your child understand that many of the challenges they are dealing with are ADHD-related, not personal deficiencies.
- Safely examine problem areas and help the child accept accountability for any misbehavior.
- Help your child build self-awareness and self-checking skills to assist them with making better choices and improving behavior.
- Offer ways to get past behaviors or situations when a child may be “stuck” (perfectionism, procrastination, distractions, etc.).
- Help your child identify their learning needs and learning styles. This will allow your child to ask for the help they need so they can be successful.
Who Can Utilize a Coach?
Any child or family member with ADHD can benefit from ADHD coaching. Some coaches will even work with individuals that have not been formally diagnosed, but are showing many symptoms. There are no special requirements to meet or referrals that need to be made. Even if you are currently using other treatment methods, a coach can be an excellent additional resource and support for both your child and your family.
Finding a Coach
ADHD coaches have training specific to the needs of the ADHD client, but many also coach clients who have not been diagnosed. The best way to find a coach who is a good fit is to interview several coaches to get an idea of the different styles and personalities of each individual. Choose a coach you feel comfortable talking with who also gives you a sense of security, so you feel free to be honest about what is happening in your life. The coach should be supportive, non-judgmental, and able to understand the problems you discuss.
